Approximately 3 million people are living with HIV in the WHO European Region and about 41 milions globally. The epidemic is forgotten but non gone. Mental health problems are the most frequent comorbidities and are associated to poorer medical outcomes, less adherance to antiretroviral treatment and less quality of life. People with HIV have to face stressful live events and stressful situations related to the illness, such as stigma, isolation, ageing, cognitive impairment, side-effects due to antiretroviral treatments, among others. Anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as sleep disturbances are the most frequent complaints. Moreover, people with severe mental disorders or substance use are at greater risk of acquiring the infection. Therefore, HIV medical care providers, internal medicine physicians and mental health providers should be aware of the importance of these often unmet needs in people with HIV and should be informed or to manage with the diagnostic and therapeutical complexity of the mental health problems in people with HIV. This webinar will provide a brief overview of the current state of the HIV infection, and will present recommendations and instruments for the best diagnostic and treatment of the most frequent mental health disorders in this population.
